Salary Starts With Scope

Electrical supervisors lead work crews while carrying technical and operational responsibility. The title can cover a small maintenance team, a commercial installation crew, a shutdown workforce or a long-running capital project. Those roles should not be priced or compared as though they are identical.

Before discussing pay, make the responsibility clear. Is the supervisor planning work, allocating people, checking quality, coordinating contractors, reviewing permits, managing outages, reporting progress, mentoring apprentices, or all of the above?

Ask for the details that affect both workload and conditions:

  • team size, experience mix and direct reports
  • site type, hours, roster and travel
  • live plant, project, shutdown or maintenance context
  • responsibility for planning, permits and contractor coordination
  • authority to inspect, approve or escalate work
  • vehicle, tools, training and allowances where offered

The technical systems also matter. A supervisor leading a crew around basic installations faces a different brief from someone coordinating complex controls, high-risk maintenance or a major project handover.

For Candidates

Prepare examples of how you set expectations, protect quality and keep a crew productive when plans change. Describe the job context, your personal responsibility and the result. Be specific about licences, site inductions and technical experience, but keep those current and verifiable.

Leadership evidence carries weight. A strong supervisor can explain how they communicate with trades, operations, project managers and clients without losing sight of safe, well-planned work.

For Employers

Write a brief that distinguishes supervision from senior trade work. State the decisions the person owns, the size of crew and the site conditions. Verify licence status and any role-specific requirements through the relevant regulator and your own safety process before engagement.

An honest brief makes pay conversations more useful and the shortlist more reliable. Book a recruitment chat to discuss an electrical leadership hire.
