How to Assess a Commissioning Engineer Role

Commissioning engineers bring a system from installation to safe handover. That can include reviewing drawings, planning tests, checking instruments and controls, resolving faults, recording results and working with operations after start-up.

The title covers very different jobs. A building-services commissioning role is not the same as an automation, power, water or process-plant project. Before comparing offers, get the scope clear.

Build a Fair Comparison

Ask for the full brief in writing. Start with the system and project stage, then establish who owns test procedures, fault resolution, documentation and final sign-off. Confirm whether the work is electrical, instrumentation, controls or multi-discipline.

Then compare conditions, not only base pay:

  • roster, travel and site location
  • permanent employment or project contract
  • overtime, shift and call-out expectations
  • accommodation, transport and site allowances where offered
  • tool, vehicle, training and professional-development support
  • reporting line and size of commissioning team

A candidate with proven experience on the same platform, plant type or project phase may have a different market position from an engineer with a similar number of years in a different setting. Use relevant evidence, not a generic seniority label.

For Candidates

Keep a short project record. Note systems commissioned, test methods used, software or platforms, site conditions, safety responsibilities and what you personally delivered. Do not overstate sign-off authority. Employers will test this detail in interview.

If moving into commissioning, look for work that builds exposure to drawings, loop checks, test packs, fault finding and handover documentation. A strong maintenance or controls background can be useful when paired with clear project evidence.

For Employers

Set out the technical scope before advertising. State the plant, systems, roster, location and project phase. Separate essential experience from skills that can be learned on the job. This helps candidates make an informed call and makes salary discussions faster.
